| Handouts |
These documents were developed by faculty in our department for the mentoring lunch series. We believe they are accurate and balanced, but, as always, it's best to ask for guidance from multiple sources.
1. Tenure Timeline Start to Finish
This handout includes a detailed timeline, along with some tips
and considerations related to tenure.
2. Mentor-Mentee Discussion Topics
A list of topics that may be useful for faculty mentors and mentees to discuss
in their meetings.
3. Writing the
Research Statement
Some considerations for writing this important part of your materials for
the third year review and the tenure process.
| Sample Statements |
Faculty have generously shared the following statements with the understanding that (a) they are only for use by junior faculty in the Department of Psychology at George Mason University, and (b) they are not to be shared outside of our department. All of these documents are password protected. Contact the chairs of the mentoring committee for the password.

Here we post documents developed outside of our department that cover topics relevant to junior faculty and faculty mentors.
1. Mentoring New Faculty: Advice to Department Chairs
This paper was written in 1993 by Marjorie A. Olmstead at the University of
Washington. It has lots to offer faculty mentors and mentees in psychology, even
though it was written for chairs of physics departments.
2. How to Succeed
in the Academy: A Chair's Advice to Junior Faculty
This article was written in 2009 by Shala Mills at Fort Hays State
University. It offers seven practical guidelines for junior faculty success.
